The company recently launched at the DemoFall conference, on September 10, 2008. Microstaq&s;s silicon chips are designed to replace the complex metal solenoids and valves that control the flow of refrigerants in air conditioning units. Since they don&s;t have moving parts that use energy and give off heat during operation, the chips can operate 25 to 30 percent more efficiently than traditional valves. On September 22nd, Mirostaq announce a $12.5 million Series B round of investment. Funding was led by Good Energies, with follow-on investments from existing investors Yaletown Venture Partners and Polygon Group.
