Pretty much anyone living in New York City can attest to the difficulties with getting things fixed in their apartment. Landlords are adversarial, buildings are old, and inspections can be impossible to schedule. They hope to do something about that. JustFix.nyc is a tool for renters to organize and take action in getting repairs made in their apartment. Through a combination of human-centered design, case management, and expert advice at all levels, they have developed a single online resource for renters to ensure that their fundamental right to safe and healthy housing is met. They incorporate datasets from city agencies - some provided only through FOIA requests - with algorithms developed hand-in-hand with lawyers and tenant advocates. This allows us to provide a location-aware list of options that one has to build out their case, from city hotlines to community organizations to legal procedures in Housing Court. They automate complex tasks such as creating and mailing a formal letter of complaint to landlords. JustFix.nyc is built to work alongside the invaluable person-to-person services that the many neighborhood organizations currently offer - users can easily share their case with advocates, lawyers, and judges as a way to add transparency to their situation.
